A little bit of history

What is known as ""Vintage"" rattan, archetypal examples are the famous Coquille shell or the Soleil sun mirror, is inspired more by the ""modernist"" style of post-war, sober, practical, popular, a little futuristic for the time, and very ""occidental-centric"". It is the France of reconstruction and Tati's films! The old order began to crack in the mid-60s: the Vietnam War, hippies returning from Kathmandu, trends were becoming more oriental... The small world of rattan realised that Asian craftsmen were not waiting for them to make rattan furniture that looked good and that, well, it was very much in the spirit of the times. The Tambour footstool was a pivotal product typical of this new state of mind. It was adorned with scrolls and spirals never seen before, and adopted a versatile format and a coolness that challenged the slightly stilted conventions of the time. The new golden age of rattan was emerging, coming directly from Thailand and Indonesia, exuberant, exotic, cheap, which would bring the famous Emmanuelle armchair, make the success of the Pier Import chain, and launch KOK on its path to cane from the Philippines.

Frame in natural unpeeled rattan, bound with split rattan, 4 plastic pads, one on each foot. Overall dimensions: height 40 cm x 37 cm. Seat depth and width 34cm. Weight 1.4 kg. Made in Indonesia.
